New Zealand

General information
New Zealand is situated in the South Pacific Ocean, 1600 km South East from Australia. New Zealand consists of two islands with a total length from North to South of 1600 km and many small islands groups on the coastline. Working in New Zealand is a great experience for people who come from overseas. The New Zealand healthcare system is often regarded as being a little traditional. However, with its modern advanced techniques, it offers good healthcare services throughout the northern and southern island. We primarily fill in vacancies for acute hospitals.

Registration
In New Zealand, healthcare professionals need to be registered with a professional registration body. A registration procedure takes up to several months. Please note: only after having obtained your registration in New Zeeland you can apply for a job through our agency. For more information on registration regulations we refer to the individual registration website (see Links).

Salaries and contracts
Salaries in New Zealand vary per healthcare institute. Your professional certificates and work experience are graded. Contracts vary from 12 months to longer. Sometimes also shorter contracts are considered. In case desirable, contracts can be extended with a maximum of three year. After that period, a contract for undetermined time is issued (provided a residency permit has been granted).

Working week and social security
In New Zealand a working week of 40 hours is normal. The minimum amount of annual leave amounts 15 days per year with additionally 9-11 public holidays.  The type of shifts and duration of shifts (e.g. 11,5 hours or 7,5 hours) vary per hospital. Social security offers good basic security.

Accommodation
In some cases, accommodation is provided and offered for free or subsidized by the hospital you are employed. Not all hospitals offer staff accommodation. If a hospital does not provide accommodation you will be assisted every step of the way by our colleague organisation.

Work and residency permit
To apply for a Work Visa for New Zealand you need to hold an offer of employment for which you are qualified and there are no suitable New Zealanders available. As certain healthcare professionals (e.g. nurses) are in such high demand in New Zealand, they fall into one of the special categories that the Government has approved. You will be issued with a work permit for the length of your contract, but this can be extended up to a maximum stay of three years from the date you first arrived in New Zealand.
